CAIRO – The Ministry of Finance increased spending on social protection programs during the first half of the 2024/2025 fiscal year, according to its semi-annual economic and financial performance report.
It said that health allocations reached EGP 102 billion, up from EGP 81.1 billion in the same period last year. Education spending rose to EGP 152.1 billion, compared to EGP 120.2 billion, it added.
The ministry noted that the treasury transferred EGP 85.6 billion to the National Pension Fund, EGP 71 billion for fuel subsidies, and EGP 59 billion for food subsidies.
Around 61.5 million citizens receive food support through ration cards, and 69.5 million benefit from subsidized bread, the ministry said.
Support continues for the Takaful and Karama programs and social pensions, benefiting 5.2 million families, it further said.
Gas connections were subsidized for 1.2 million homes, and support was allocated for building 330,000 housing units for low-income families, it added.
