CAIRO – Egyptian Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mohamed Shaker has met with European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson along with the EU ambassador to Egypt and their accompanying delegation.

The meeting took up ways of boosting cooperation between the two sides in the energy and renewable energy sphere.

In statements, Shaker hailed the distinguished ties between Egypt’s electricity sector and the European Commission.

Reviewing the achievements made by the Electricity and Energy Ministry, Shaker underlined keenness on the sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy.

He also pointed out to the unwavering support of the political leadership to the electricity sector, given its main role in the development process.

The Egyptian government is looking to speed up renewable energy projects in the country, with plans to produce about 10,000 megawatts by 2023, the minister said during the meeting.

He, meanwhile, stressed the importance of electrical interconnections with neighbouring countries, referring to the existing links with Jordan, Libya and Sudan.

The minister pointed out that contracts were signed to award the electrical interconnection project between Saudi Arabia and Egypt to exchange an amount of up to 3,000 megawatts of electricity.

Egypt seeks to become a regional hub for renewable energy exchange with Europe and Arab and African countries, he added.

Shaker stressed that green hydrogen is receiving great attention as a promising source of energy in the near future.

Simson, for her part, hailed the great expertise of the Egyptian electricity and renewable energy sector in all fields.

She also said she is looking forward to upping the volume of cooperation with Egypt in different fields, especially those of green hydrogen and renewable energy.

The European Commission is keen on finalizing the linkage project with Greece in order to enable Egypt to be a regional hub for energy exchange with Europe and Arab and African countries, she added.
