The Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) and the Saudi Electricity Company on Tuesday signed contracts with the companies tasked to implement an Egyptian-Saudi power grid project whose total cost hit $1.8 billion with a production capacity of 3,000 megawatts.

Minister of International Cooperation Rania El Mashat and Saudi Ambassador in Cairo Osama bin Ahmed Nuqali attended the signing ceremony.
The Saudi National Contracting Company (NCC), the Saudi Services For Electro Mechanic Works Company Limited (SSEM), Hyundai Engineering & Construction (E&C) signed the contracts for the implementation of aerial transmission lines in Saudi Arabia, while China National Electric Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNEEC) and CiAn Electronics Co of China and Giza Cables Company will be carrying out the aerial transmission lines in the Egyptian side.

ABB International Group and the Saudi Company for Electricity and Mechanical Services signed the contracts for the grid transformers in Saudi Arabia, while a consortium of ABB and Orascom signed contracts for establishing transformers inside Egypt.

The maritime line will be implemented by an Italian company.

During the signing ceremony, Minister of Electricity Mohamed Shaker praised the historic and strategic relations binding Egypt and Saudi Arabia and described them as ‘model to be followed” in the joint Arab action.

He also said the project will benefit both countries and would help in achieving power supply stability, adding that Egypt managed after experiencing political stability to improve its energy sector.

Saudi Energy Minister Abdel Aziz bin Salman, for his part, commended the close ties between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, noting that the power interconnection between the two countries would open the doors for linking with other world countries.
