Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades has stressed the importance of increasing cooperation with Egypt in the fields of energy and electricity linkage.
Speaking at a press conference with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi at the end of their talks at the Ittihadiya palace in Cairo, Anastasiades called for activating an agreement signed earlier with Egypt for extending an undersea pipeline to transport natural gas to Europe, pointing out that Egyptian-Cypriot technical committees will hold a meeting in mid-September on that score.
He added that both Egypt and Cyprus will also sign a memorandum of understanding this month on the electricity interconnection project between the two countries.
Moreover, a memorandum of understanding among Egypt, Cyprus and Greece will be inked under the African-European power linkage project.
Meanwhile, Anastasiades described as “historical” the meeting held at the presidential level for the first time by the Egyptian-Cypriot higher governmental committee, noting that the two countries have a strong desire to promote bilateral cooperation to better serve political and economic ties.
He also offered condolences to Egypt over the four Egyptians, who were found dead in Cyprus in July as the result of the huge forest fire.
