Egypt and Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen co-operation in liquefied natural gas (LNG) sales and imports and to expand collaboration across other energy sectors, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said.
The agreement was signed in Doha by Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Karim Badawi, and Qatar’s Minister of State for Energy Affairs, Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi—also Chief Executive of QatarEnergy—in the presence of senior officials from both sides.
The MoU aims to support Egypt’s efforts to diversify its natural gas supply sources and secure LNG shipments, while continuing work to boost domestic production. Egyptian officials said the agreement would add value to the energy sector and further reinforce Egypt’s position as a regional hub for natural gas.
The memorandum also reflects the growing strategic partnership between Egypt and Qatar in the energy sector. QatarEnergy currently operates in six offshore exploration blocks in Egypt’s Mediterranean waters and plans to inject new investments over the next five years, including the drilling of several exploratory wells in cooperation with major international energy companies.
Separately, the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) and QatarEnergy signed implementation terms for the delivery of several Qatari LNG cargoes to Egypt’s Ain Sokhna and Damietta ports. The step comes in line with a previously concluded agreement between the two companies and supports Egypt’s near-term gas supply needs.
