Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and the AI Singapore (AISG), at the National University of Singapore (NUS), have signed a partnership to raise AI awareness.

The agreement will implement two of AISG’s premier talent development programmes in AI, the AI Apprenticeship Programme (AIAP) and AI for Everyone (AI4E) in Egypt.

This will help Egypt launch capacity-building programmes to promote the country’s AI capabilities.

The agreement covers localising AI4E with Egypt’s Information Technology Institute, offered in Arabic on the internet as an awareness programme, the MCIT statement said Tuesday.

The virtual signing ceremony that took place on Monday was witnessed by  Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, and Singapore’s Minister for Communications and Information and Minister in Charge of Smart Nation and Cybersecurity, Josephine Teo.

Signatories to the agreement were AI Singapore’s Director of AI Innovation, Laurence Liew and Advisor to MCIT’s Minister for AI, Golestan Radwan. The Singapore Ambassador to Egypt, Dominic Goh, and the Egyptian Ambassador to Singapore Mahmoud El Maghraby, attended.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister Talaat noted Egypt’s keenness to employ AI to achieve economic growth and development by establishing a solid and sustainable industry for AI. He added that building up human capacity is the cornerstone to the realisation of this vision.

Talaat invited Teo to visit Egypt and have firsthand experience of the country’s communication and IT industry.

For her part, Teo said that the Covid-19 pandemic proved how the use of digital technologies, AI in particular, is essential to face crises.

Singapore launched its Smart Nation and Cybersecurity initiative in 2019.
