Minister of State for Information Diaa Rashwan proposed the adoption of an Arab media code of ethics to confront the spread of rumors and offensive campaigns targeting relations between Arab countries.
During a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Rashwan stressed the need for serious and decisive steps to address what he described as the “chaos of misinformation” circulating on some social media platforms and unregulated outlets, which aim to undermine Egyptian-Arab relations.
He announced that his ministry plans to submit an urgent request to the Council of Arab Information Ministers to convene an emergency meeting to discuss two main proposals.
The first is the development of a unified strategic plan and a joint Arab media response to crises affecting any Arab country.
The second is the adoption of an “Arab Media Code of Ethics” that would oblige all Arab states to prevent and criminalise offensive content or smear campaigns targeting fellow nations, with strict enforcement across the region.
