Egypt has strongly condemned the escalation of Israeli military operations in Lebanon, with attacks deliberately targeted vital civilian facilities and infrastructure, including bridges linking different areas.
Cairo termed this as a blatant violation of Lebanese sovereignty and a serious breach of international law and the UN Charter.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Egypt’s firm support for Lebanon’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. It expressed full solidarity with Lebanese state institutions during this critical time.
Egypt stressed the need for full implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, without selectivity.
This is essential to enable state institutions, especially the Lebanese army, to carry out their duties and extend control over all Lebanese territory, with weapons restricted to state authority, it said.
Targeting and destruction of infrastructure reflect a clear Israeli policy of collective punishment. It warned this could lead to large-scale forced displacement, potentially affecting up to one million Lebanese and emptying entire areas of residents, Cairo said.
Egypt rejected the use of humanitarian suffering as a tool of military and political pressure. It called on the international community, especially the UN Security Council, to act immediately to halt these practices and prevent further deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation, warning against deeper instability in Lebanon.
