Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Wednesday received a phone call from UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly during which the latter voiced his country’s deep concern over the developments in the Sudan amid signs of deterioration of security conditions there.

Cleverly was keen to listen to Shoukry’s assessment of the crisis, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

Shoukry reviewed the outcome of Egypt’s contacts on the crisis, and a detailed assessment of the situation in Sudan. He emphasized the prime importance of reaching a ceasefire as soon as possible, the spokesman added.

In addition, the Egyptian chief diplomat stressed the importance of holding talk with the conflicting parties, as well as listening to the voice of reason to spare the blood of the Sudanese people.

Shoukry underlined the importance of dealing with the conflict in the Sudan as an internal affair, noting that external parties should refrain from interfering in a way that could fuel the dispute. He also called for integrating regional and international efforts to contain the crisis, the spokesman said.

The two ministers agreed to continue consultation and coordination over the coming period to follow up efforts seeking to contain the crisis.

In another phone call Shoukry received from Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi, the Egyptian chief diplomat reviewed the ongoing efforts and contacts at all levels to contain the crisis, Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.
