CAIRO – Al-Ahly is still topping the standings of the Egyptian Premier League to maintain their unbeaten run as defending champions Zamalek was held to draw at 24th matchday of the 2022/2023 Egyptian Premier League season.
At the Borg el-Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Al-Ahly stunned Smouha 2-0.
Striker Mohamed Sherif opened the scoring in the first-half in the 27th minutes as winger Mahmoud Kahraba added the second in the first-half in the 65th minutes.
The victory cemented the Red Devils position on top of the domestic league table with 54 points from 21 matches.
The Alexandrian-based club remained at 9th place with 31 points from 26 matches.
At Cairo International Stadium, Zamalek was held to a 2-2 draw against Arab Contractors.
Nigerian forward John Okoli opened the scoring for the Arab Contractors in the 25th minutes as winger Ahmed el-Sayed “Zizo” equalised for the White Knights in the 33rd minutes.
In the second-half, Mostafa Shalabi added the second for Zamalek in the 58th minutes from the penalty spot as centre-forward player Fadi Farid grabbed the an injury-time equaliser 90+2.
The two-time defending champions have slipped further away from the title race, now standing fourth in the table with 40 points, 13 behind leaders Ahly, who have played three games fewer.
The match was the first for Zamalek’s Colombian coach Carlos Osorio.
The draw slipped Zamalek away from the title race. They are now 4th in the table with 40 points from 24 matches.
Arab Contractors remained at 8th place with 36 points from 26 games.
