WHO regional director for the Eastern Mediterranean Ahmed Al-Mandhari said Egypt and the political leadership have achieved great successes in recent years in the health sector.
He added that Egypt launched the 100 Million Health Initiative through a series of health programmes.
WHO has communicated Egypt’s experience in combating hepatitis C to a number of countries in the region, which are now experiencing the benefits of this experience, he said, adding that in 2019 a delegation from Egypt went to Pakistan to share the Egyptian expertise with regard to hepatitis C.
Al-Mandhari’s remarks came during an Iftar banquet organized by the World Health Organisation to celebrate its 75th anniversary in Cairo on Sunday. The event was attended by health representatives and officials.
“In 1948, countries of the world came together and founded our organisation to promote health, keep the world safe and serve the vulnerable,” Al-Mandhari said.
“I’d like to give special thanks to the government of Egypt for hosting the regional office for all this time with generosity and full support,” said Al-Mandhari, who mentioned that the WHO regional office began operations in Alexandria in 1949, then moved to Cairo in 2000.
