Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri has reiterated the importance of reviving the political process to settle the Syrian crisis at the earliest and affirmed Egypt’s continuing support for the mission and efforts of the UN special envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen.

During a meeting with the visiting UN envoy on Monday, Minister Shoukri expressed Egypt’s keenness on reaching an early settlement of the Syrian crisis in accordance with the international resolutions of relevance including in the foremost UN Security Council resolution 2254, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said in a statement following the meeting.

Minister Shoukri also outlined Egypt’s support to Syria in facing the consequences of last month’s devastating earthquake, referring in this connection to the visit he paid to Damascus to express Egypt’s stand by Syria in that crisis, Spokesman Abu Zeid said.

For his part, the UN envoy expressed appreciation for Egypt’s backing to his mission and its efforts to push for a settlement and extend humanitarian support in conformity with Egypt’s pivotal role in the region, the spokesman said.
