Egypt’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa on Sunday met with South Korean Ambassador to Egypt Hong Jin-wook for bilateral cooperation in tourism and heritage preservation.

The two officials re-affirmed government support for people-to-people exchange between the two countries, an official press release said.

Ambassador Hong said Egypt’s travel advisory level for Korean citizens was lowered last August for the first time in eight years and direct flights between Korea and Egypt are expected to resume this year.

Based on the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in January 2022, the Korean government is contributing $13.6 million to projects to protect and restore Egypt’s cultural heritage.

Projects include the restoration the pylon of the Ramesseum Temple in Luxor and digitising heritage documentation, the ambassador said.

For his part, Issa expressed gratitude toward the Korean government and the embassy for promoting active people-to-people exchange and caring for Egypt’s cultural assets.
