CAIRO – Egyptian champions Al Ahly have lodged a complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) against Sudan’s Al-Hilal and their fans in the CAF Champions League.
The two teams played a match in the second round of group stage in the CAF Champions League that was held in Sudan’s Omdurman behind closed doors due to sanctions from CAF against the Sudanese side.
In its complaint, the ten-time African Champions Al Ahly said that some of Al-Hilal fans stormed the Blue Jewel Stadium in Omdurman city during Al Ahly team’s training session in the stadium on Friday. They threw fireworks at the players in the presence of the CAF representative, who examined the thrown objects and reported the incident.
Defying the CAF’s decision to hold the match with no spectators allowed in the stadium to watch due to the lack of safety conditions in the facility, Al-Hilal club reportedly allowed more than 1,000 spectators to attend the game.
Al-Hilal team failed to provide safe and decent means of transportation for the Al Ahly team and there were sewage overflows at Al Ahly players’ dressing room after the match, according to the complaint.
Al Ahly club referred to a number of violations by members of the medical and administrative staff of Al-Hilal team towards Al Ahly players during and after the match, in addition to violations by Al-Hilal supporters in the stadium towards Al Ahly officials.
