ADDIS ABABA – The 36th African Union Summit kicked off in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Saturday, in the presence of several heads of state and government of members states, Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported.
The 36th ordinary Session of the AU Assembly will deliberate on various continental issues focusing under the theme, “Accelerating AfCFTA Implementation” over the coming two days.
The leaders will discuss on various continental issues including combating climate change, overcoming food security challenges and ways of accelerating the implementation of the AfCFTA.
They are also expected to adopt a series of protocols aimed at accelerating full implementation of Africa’s new free trade area.
AU Peace and Security Commission is also expected to present proposal for new financing of security operations.
In addition to leaders from AU members states, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and heads of other international organizations are also participating at the summit.
