Egypt’s Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker said on Sunday coordination is under way with the Greek side to agree on the international consultancy office that will conduct the technical and economic feasibility study of the power connection project between the two countries.

Speaking to MENA, Shaker said 2,000 megawatt can be exchanged through the electricity interconnection project between Egypt and Greece.

He added that an agreement was held with a Belgian company to discuss installing underwater power cables between Egypt and Greece.

He said there is a growing European interest in power linkage projects with Egypt given the country’s abundance of renewable energy resources at a time Europe is looking for alternatives to Russian gas.

As for the interconnection project with Saudi Arabia, he said around 87 percent of the aerial power line stretching between Badr and Taba was finalized.

Despite global challenges and the current disruption in supply chain, efforts are under way to finalize the first 1,500 megawatt by May 2025 and another 500 megawatt by November 2025.
