Vodafone Egypt, the largest mobile network operator in Egypt, has achieved LEED Gold Green certification for the company’s main building in the Smart Village, for the operation and maintenance department. Through this certification, Vodafone becomes one of the first entities to obtain this certificate in the telecommunications sector, leveraging its application of LEED systems in order to achieve sustainability and the establishment of environmentally friendly buildings. This comes as a perpetuation of Vodafone’s effective role in applying environmental sustainability standards, with the aim of enabling the Egyptian society to save energy and establish green cities.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a set of rating systems for evaluating the design and environmental performance of buildings, homes and neighborhoods and it is the most widely used green building classification system in the world today, where it covers almost all types of construction. LEED provides a framework for healthy, efficient, carbon and cost-saving green buildings, where LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement. It is awarded after applying several tests for buildings, and it is classified as a world gold standard indicating that these buildings were designed and built based on LEED systems, which indicates that these buildings are of high efficiency and energy.

Mohamed Abdallah, Chief Executive Officer at Vodafone Egypt said “We are proud of Vodafone obtaining the LEED Gold Green certification, as we believe in the pressing need for preserving the environment and establishing an integrated work system that prioritizes the rationalization of energy use. We aim to secure the requirements of sustainable development, which goes in line with the government’s directions to implement environmental sustainability standards within Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the company’s full and continuous support of the Egypt National Climate Change Strategy (NCCS) 2050”.

Abdallah added that this certificate is a culmination of the company’s ongoing efforts in improving energy efficiency and compacting climate change as a perpetuation to complement its national role during COP 27. He also pointed out that Vodafone is one of the first companies committed to reducing carbon emissions for its operations by 2030, and reaching zero carbon emissions in 2040.

The company also is planning to be the first mobile operator to steer with green technology, compatible with 100% environmental preservation during the coming period. This step aims to improve the quality of life of the Egyptian citizens and improving their standards of living within the framework of an integrated and sustainable environmental system.

It is worth mentioning that Vodafone has a track record of distinguished certificates addressing climate change and environmental preservation. It was the first telecom company to receive the ISO 50001 certification for its energy management system last February, to become one of the first companies operating in the telecom sector in Africa and the Middle East to obtain this certificate for applying the best systems in energy management and rationalization.

In addition, Vodafone received a prestigious award from the Energy Efficiency Initiative held by the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy, the United Nations Development Program, and the American Chamber of Commerce in 2018, for implementing a project that reduces electricity consumption.
