Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri has hailed the conclusions of the world climate summit in Sharm el-Sheikh as tantamount to a gateway to advancing towards climate neutrality and resilience.
Speaking to the closing session of the UN conference of the United Nations Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Climate Change in Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday , Minister Shoukri, who is COP27 president, called for taking the conference conclusions as messages addressed to the world for future generations in order to set the appropriate pace for implementing the Paris Agreement.
The conference that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi inaugurated on November 7 and saw impressive participation by leaders, statesmen, environmentalists, experts and non-governmental organisations from nearly 200 countries concluded its extensive work and debates on Sunday.
“The work that we have been able to accomplish over the past two weeks and the results that we have reached are a testament to our collective will,” Minister Shoukri said.
“Being here together, we sent a clear message to the world that despite the difficulties the world faces, the different visions and ambitions, as well as the levels of fear and concerns, we remain committed to our fight against climate change,” the Egyptian foreign minister and COP27 president said.
Shoukri expressed appreciation for tireless efforts exerted by all participating delegations to reach these results and called for adopting the Sharm el-Sheikh Implementation Plan and to take appropriate decisions in this regard, the Middle East News Agency (MENA) reported.
Urging the parties to the Paris Agreement to consider reports of the Adaptation Committee, COP27 president Shoukri said all adaptation-related issues were referred to the meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement for further consultations, calling for the adoption of the draft resolution titled “Adaptation Committee Report 2022”.
On COP27 agenda’s item regarding “The Warsaw International Mechanism for Losses and Damage Associated with Climate Change Impact”, the foreign minister urged delegates to adopt the relevant decisions without objections, taking into consideration all arrangements related to financing to be able to make up for damage created by climate change, according to the same MENA report.
“This COP has taken an important step towards justice. I welcome the decision to establish a loss and damage fund and to operationalise it in the coming period,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres said in a video message issued from the conference venue in Egypt, underscoring that the voices of those on frontlines of the climate crisis must be heard, MENA reported.
“Clearly this will not be enough, but it is a much-needed political signal to rebuild broken trust,” the UN chief said, stressing that the UN system will support the effort every step of the way.
Minister Shoukri called on the parties to Paris Agreement to adopt the conference’s draft resolutions on the Green Climate Fund and climate measures regarding agriculture and food safety. He also urged the parties to Paris Agreement to look into articles regarding clean development and adaptation fund, the news agency reported.
