Mahmoud Mohieldin, the UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt and UN Special Envoy on Financing the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, participated in the launch of “Decent Life Initiative in Africa”on the margins of “Agriculture and Adaptation Day”, held as part of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), hosted by Sharm El-Sheikh from 7-18 November.

The initiative was launched in the presence of Minister of Planning and Economic Development Dr. Hala Al-Saeed, Minister of Local Development Hisham Amna, Dr. Ghada Wali, Under-Secretary-General of the UN and Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, a number of African ministers, the former President of Colombia and representatives of international partners.

During his speech, Dr. Mohieldin thanked President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the Egyptian government for their efforts to launch many smart green projects and transform concepts into projects in Africa through many regional partnerships and within the framework of a comprehensive approach.

The climate champion added that COP27 is the summit of the implementation of pledges and partnerships, noting that the launch of the initiative for a decent life in Africa comes within the framework of localizing development work away from issues of centralization and decentralization.

In another context, Mohieldin explained the importance of enhancing human dignity within the framework of sustainable development, which was urged by the religions, praising Egypt’s efforts to attract investments that crossed the Egyptian borders to include all African towns and subregions.

At the international level, Mohieldin praised the efforts of Germany and the US to support adaptation in Africa, pointing to the establishment of the “Cairo Center for Learning and Excellence on Adaptation and Resilience” in addition to supporting the Africa Initiative for Adaptation.

The climate champion referred to the issuance of a report that includes all relevant topics in terms of resilience in the face of climate changes, infrastructure, food, oceans and finance, and how to enhance the participation of international partners in the localization of development work by engaging in smart green projects.

Mohieldin concluded his speech by thanking everyone who is keen to invest and pay hard to ensure a decent life for citizens.
