Executive Director of UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Ghada Waly said that the office is working on combating environmental crimes as they are among the main causes for climate change.
In statements to MENA on the sidelines of her participation in COP27, Waly urged a commitment to the pledges made by the rich countries towards the developing countries that suffer from crises of energy and climate.
There is a strong relation between combating crime and climate, she said, adding that the environmental crimes include cutting down forests, reducing emissions and polluting oceans with plastic and garbage.
Trafficking wood, wild plants, ivory, skin and bones of some animals negatively affect wildlife, she said.
Waly asserted that COP 27 is very important, adding that there are 110 leaders of countries and governments partake in the event in addition to more than 3000 NGOs and 165 countries.
