Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Nevine el-Qabbag and Minister of Manpower Hassan Shehata attended a function ‘ Your Education is the Key to Your Decision’ to mark the International Day of the Girl 2022.
The event was held in partnership with Plan International and the Canadian Embassy in Cairo.
The government is working hard to support girls’ rights to good health care, high-quality education and sound upbringing, in line with political leadership’s directives to pay more attention to girls and women, as they are the backbone of development of any society, the minister said.
The state supports women in the fight against all forms of violence, abuse and discrimination, the minister went on, adding that the 2014 Constitution and the National Human Rights Strategy, launched in September 2021, guarantee full health, social and economic rights of girls.
Egypt is one of the signatories to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, eliminating all forms of discrimination against disabled women and girls, el-Qabbag said.
El-Qabbag said her ministry is working hard with civil society organisations to improve living for the most deprived nationwide.
A raft of measures and several initiatives have been launched to support girls with special needs in education and health through the Takaful and Karama programme, she said, adding that her ministry has taken action to put an end to female genital mutilation (FGM) and under-age marriage.
In the last ten years, there has been increased attention to issues that matter to girls among governments, policymakers and the public, and more opportunities for girls to have their voices heard on the global stage, el-Qabbag said.
“It is time for us all to stand accountable – with and for girls – and to invest in a future that believes in their agency, leadership and potential,” she said.
