NEW ALAMEIN, Egypt – The Cabinet approved during its meeting on Thursday a draft law amending some provisions of the Telecommunication Regulation Law promulgated by Law No. 10 of 2003.

The meeting was held at the government headquarters in New Alamein City under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli.

The move aims to increase the penalty for the possession of illegal mobile phone signal boosters; as part of the State’s plan to regulate telecommunications and develop their services.

The draft law bans importing, manufacturing, assembling, possessing, using, operating, installing or marketing any telecommunication equipment until after obtaining a permit from the competent authorities.

Such equipment also has to be approved by the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), according to the bill.

The draft law stipulates that whoever imports, manufactures, assembles, possesses, uses, operates, installs or markets any unapproved telecommunication equipment without a permit from NTRA shall be imprisoned for a period of not less than a year and not more than five years and/or be fined not less than LE2 million and not more than LE5 million.
