ORAN, Algeria – Egypt raised its tally to 12 medals, including 3 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals after day two at the 2022 Mediterranean Games in Algeria’s Oran.

The medals have pushed the country to third in medals table behind leaders Algeria and Turkey.

Egyptian women’s table tennis team won the gold medal after defeating Italy in the final.

karatekas Youssef Badawy took the gold medal in the competitions’ 84kg category after defeating his Serbian opponent in the final.

Star Feryal Ashraf grabbed the gold medal in the -68kg karate event after beating her Italian opponent in the final.

Greco-Roman wrestler Abdul Rahman Omar won a bronze medal in the competitions of 67kg category after defeating his Portuguese opponent.

Wrestler Noureddine Hassan claimed a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman competitions of 87kg category after defeating his Portuguese opponent.

Greco-Roman wrestler Haithem Fahmy got a bronze medal in the competitions of 60kg category stunning his Croatian opponent.

Wrestler Abdel Latif Manea won a silver medal in the Greco-Roman competitions of 130kg category stunning his Croatian opponent.

Abdullah Mamdouh grabbed the silver medal in the Karate competitions’ 75kg category.

The national Karate team earned two silver medals via Reem Ahmed and Ahlam Youssef, while Abdullah Mamdouh, Ahmed Ayman and Amr Alaa won the bronze ones.

Reem Ahmed snatched the silver medal in the Karate competitions’ 50kg category.

Ahlam Youssef claimed Egypt’s second silver medal in the Karate competitions -55kg category.

Abdullah Mamdouh grabbed the bronze medal in the Karate competitions’ -75kg category.

Ahmed Ayman won the bronze medal in the Karate competitions’ -67kg category.

Amr Alaa got the bronze medal in the Karate competitions’ -60kg category.

The 19th Mediterranean Games kicked off in Algeria’s Oran on Saturday.

Up to 3,390 athletes from 26 Mediterranean countries are taking part in the games, with Egypt participating with 184 athletes in 19 sports.

Karateka Cylia Ouikene won Algeria’s first gold medal. The World Championships quarter-finalist defeated Reem Salama in the women’s -50kg karate decider after also beating Slovenia’s Ursa Haberl, Sara Pinto Leal of Portugal, and Spaniard Alba Pinilla Sanchez en route to the final.

Ouikene dominated her last opponent 5-0 in what was the most comprehensive result of her tournament, having picked up 2-0 and 1-0 results prior to the deciding bout.

Moroccan Chaimae ElHayti and Pinilla Sanchez took a bronze medal each after prevailing in the repechage round.

Shortly afterwards, Louiza Abouriche secured another gold for Algeria.

The 19-year-old triumphed over Egypt’s Ahlam Youssef in the women’s -55kg final.

Elsewhere, France and Serbia were victorious in the second day of the water polo competition.

Despite it being the first official day of the Games, with the Opening Ceremony scheduled for today, water polo got underway yesterday.

France avenged their opening game loss against Montenegro with a 15-10 triumph at the Piscine du Jardin Public in Algeria’s second-biggest city.

The first quarter was an even affair as it ended 2-2 but Portugal’s sturdy defence was short lived as France then netted four times before half-time to go into the break 6-3 up.

Portugal put up more of a fight in the second half but could not stem France’s attacking prowess as they lost the remaining quarters 4-3 and 5-4.
