CAIRO – The 2020 World Health Organization (WHO) statistics showed that some 1.25 million people died from road accidents, said Secretary General of the Arab Interior Ministers Council (AIMC) Mohammed bin Ali Kuman.

Around 20-50 million people suffered from non-fatal injuries as a result of traffic accidents in the past year, Kuman added.

He made the remarks on Tuesday on the occasion of the Arab Traffic Week that is marked every year from May 4 to 10.

This week provides an ideal opportunity to educate Arab citizens in general and drivers in particular about the importance of abiding by traffic rules and driving ethics.

He went on to say that the annual statistical bulletin of traffic accidents issued by the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers unveiled that the number of car accidents reached 873,86 in 2020.

Those accidents registered in Arab states left 19,748 persons dead and 258,574 others injured, Kuman said.

About 92.45 percent of these crashes were caused by human errors, he noted.

He asserted that the Arab Interior Ministers Council pays great attention to traffic safety, through developing different strategies and programs that aim to strengthen traffic safety and reduce accidents.
