The Arab League General Secretariat warned of Israel’s attempts and schemes to liquidate the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
The UNRWA, along with its international commitment to the Palestinian refugee issue, constitutes a key element in contributing to the promotion of security and stability in the region, added the pan-Arab body.
The AL General Secretariat categorically rejects any proposals or attempts to undermine UNRWA’s work and its international responsibility towards the Palestinian refugees and their plight, affirmed Assistant AL Secretary-General for Palestine and the occupied Arab territories of the Arab League Saeed Abu Ali.
The Arab countries, particularly the host countries, are keen on preserving the UNRWA’s crucial role in providing aid and services to the Palestinian refugees, he went on to say.
In response to proposals for UNRWA’s powers and mandates, the decision of establishing the sole functioning international body responsible for the Palestinian refugees is of special importance given its key role in this respect, Abu Ali said in statements Tuesday.
He, meanwhile, called for confronting the financial crisis which is besetting the UNRWA, stressing the need of providing the necessary financial to it, through the UN.
He also urged the donor countries to meet their obligations in order to enable the UNRWA to undertake its role.
The plot against UNRWA will lead to instability in the entire region, he warned.
