Chairperson of the National Council for Women Maya Morsi said violence against women is closely related to climate change which affects services offered to women to curb violence.

She also referred to the fallout of climate change on women’s health.

She made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing the 10th scientific conference of the Ain Shams University, held under the patronage of Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Khaled Abdel Ghaffar.

She reviewed efforts exerted during the coronavirus pandemic, noting that Egypt was at the forefront of countries that took swift measures to support women during the pandemic.

She added that an international Covid-19 tracing programme – that was launched by the United Nations Development Programme and the United Nations Women – said that Egypt was the first in the Middle East, North Africa and Arab countries that took measures taking into account the social dimension.

She added that a certain category of women are facing complicated effects of the climate change, especially disabled women and rural women.

She added that the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) – which is due to be held in Sharm El Sheikh – includes an axis for empowering women and reaching a just position for women within the framework of transformation to green economy.
