Egypt on the first anniversary of the Sharm El-Sheikh peace summit called for building on its momentum to advance peace in the Middle East and achieve a two-state solution.
The summit, hosted by Egypt under the auspices of and with the participation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, US President Donald Trump and world leaders, was an important milestone in international efforts to end the war in the Gaza Strip and establish security, stability and peace in the region, the foreign ministry said.
Egypt renewed its full support for Trump’s efforts to implement his comprehensive Gaza peace plan and said it would continue close coordination with the United States and regional and international partners to ensure the plan’s requirements are fully met.
These include consolidating the ceasefire, ensuring sustained access for humanitarian aid, completing Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza, moving forward with arrangements for the plan’s second phase, and beginning early recovery and reconstruction efforts, Egypt said.
Egypt said the opportunity created by Trump’s plan should be used to launch a serious and credible political process addressing the roots of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and preventing renewed cycles of violence and escalation.
The process should lead to a just, comprehensive and lasting peace based on a two-state solution, including an independent Palestinian state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital, the ministry said. It added that this would fulfil Palestinians’ legitimate aspirations for self-determination and ensure security and stability for all peoples of the region.
