The Berenice frigate has arrived at the Alexandria naval base to join the fleet of the Egyptian navy. The ship was built by the Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri in accordance with the latest systems in armament and combat efficiency.
The Berenice frigate is the second to join the fleet of the Egyptian Navy after the Galala frigate, Military Spokesman Tamer el-Refai said Thursday.
The Berenice frigate has many technical characteristics and modern weapon systems that enable it to carry out all combat missions, as it is distinguished by its ability to sail for a distance of 6,000 nautical miles.
“It is considered a tremendous technological addition to the capabilities of the navy to support its ability to secure borders and shipping lines, support and protect the land forces along the coast during offensive and defensive operations, and secure the various natural resources of the state in the Mediterranean and Red Seas,” the statement read.
The specialised and technical crews working on the new unit were prepared and qualified in a record time, through a simultaneous training programme that was implemented in two phases in Egypt and Italy, to be able to carry out all tasks.
Commander of the Navy Ahmed Khaled said that the General Command of the Armed Forces was keen on carrying out a comprehensive strategy to develop and modernise the Egyptian naval fleet to enhance the combat capabilities of the Navy.
He also indicated that the new frigate would double the deterrence force of the Egyptian Navy as a force that achieves security and stability in the region and maintains peace and provides freedom of navigation in the region.
