Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Swailem, received a high-level technical delegation from the Iraqi Ministry of Water Resources, comprising eight senior experts and engineers, aiming to boost  technical co-operation and exchange expertise in water resources management and the use of modern technologies.

Swailem stressed that Egypt is committed to sharing its successful water-management experience with its Arab and African partners, particularly as the sector faces growing challenges.

The minister highlighted the importance of Egyptian-Iraqi co-operation in transferring expertise in agricultural drainage-water treatment and reuse, modern irrigation, biological control of aquatic weeds and advanced monitoring technologies.

According to a report submitted by the Head of the Irrigation Authority Ayman Nasr, the programme included a technical session at the Ministry covering Egypt’s strategic approach to water resources management, modern irrigation applications, and projects for treating and reusing agricultural drainage water.

The delegation also visited the Irrigation Museum in the New Capital, the National Water Research Centre in Qanater El-Khayriya, including its research laboratories and the hydraulic model of the new Deirout Barrages, as well as facilities demonstrating biological weed control and the integration of research with field applications.

The programme further included visits to the New Delta Agricultural Drainage Treatment Plant, the SCADA central monitoring system, a model farm using modern irrigation techniques and the Nile gauge in Manial.

The Iraqi delegation commended Egypt’s achievements in agricultural drainage-water treatment and reuse, particularly at the New Delta, Bahr El Baqar and El Mahsama plants.

The delegation voiced interest in transferring relevant Egyptian expertise and applications to Iraq, especially in biological weed control and modern irrigation, to support the development of Iraq’s water resources management system.
