Betting on energy storage to supercharge clean power ambitions

Egypt is quietly ramping up its investment in energy storage, driven by a clear ambition to grow renewable power, harden the national grid against disruption, and keep electricity flowing reliably as it pushes forward with its energy transition.

Last week, Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Essmat sat down with a delegation from Cairo-based renewable and infrastructure development consortium, Renergy Group Partners, and outlined the path ahead.

Battery energy storage systems already linked to the grid are being expanded, he said, while plans advance for large-scale pumped-storage hydropower.

The minister also reviewed progress on the 3,100-megawatt pumped-storage project at El-Tor in South Sinai, a facility designed to steady the grid and open the door to far more variable renewable energy.

Minister Essmat underscored how Egypt’s geography and natural resources, especially suited to pumped storage, give the country a genuine edge.

Making the most of those advantages, he argued, is essential if modern energy technologies are to deliver their full promise and speed the shift towards cleaner power.

As solar and wind capacity grows, storage is no longer optional, expert said. Their output rises and falls with the weather, and that variability places new demands on the system, they added.

Energy expert Sameh Noaman recently noted that pumped-storage hydropower can deliver large-scale, long-duration storage, while batteries respond almost instantly to shifts in supply and demand.

Used together, the two technologies increase grid flexibility, ease the load on conventional plants, and allow the system to absorb far more renewable generation without strain.

Noaman described storage as a central pillar of grid stability once solar and wind claim a larger share of the mix.

When renewable output dips, storage keeps the lights on. Just as important, it unlocks economic value: surplus electricity generated on bright, windy days can be saved and used later instead of being curtailed.

That improves the returns on renewable investments and, at the same time, strengthens the resilience of the entire national grid.
