A total of 3,000 young men and women have applied to join the Fund for Combating and Treating Addiction and Abuse’s volunteer association, with women making up 69 per cent of applicants, Director Amr Othman announced on Saturday.

Othman said most applicants are university students and graduates, with interviews underway to select candidates based on their communication, teamwork and field skills, as well as their diverse talents.

Assiut accounted for the highest number of applicants at 24 per cent, followed by Kafr El‑Sheikh at 20 per cent. Applicants from Alexandria accounted for 18 per cent.

The applicants from North Sinai and Minya stood at nine and eight per cent, respectively.

According to Othman, the selected volunteers will undergo training on addiction and drug abuse, covering the types of drugs, their effects, causes of addiction and methods of prevention.

The training will qualify them to implement awareness programmes, protect young people from drug abuse and represent the Fund at local and international youth forums.

He stressed the fund’s commitment to harnessing young people’s positive energy and developing their capacities as leaders in voluntary work, particularly in drug-demand reduction. Volunteers will also contribute to raising awareness among different segments of society about the dangers of addiction.

The Fund has more than 35,000 volunteers across the country, with tasks including contributing to prevention plans and strategies, implementing awareness activities, and participating in national and international events.
