The leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Italy on Thursday condemned Israel’s decision to publish construction tenders for a controversial settlement project in the E1 area of the occupied West Bank, saying it threatened the prospects of a two-state solution.
“The Israeli government’s decision … is unacceptable,” the four countries said in a joint statement.
They warned that the project could divide the West Bank and damage the territorial contiguity of a future Palestinian state.
The four governments reiterated their position that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law, citing the stance of the international community and the UN Security Council.
They also expressed concern over escalating settler violence against Palestinian civilians and restrictions affecting the Palestinian economy.
“We urge the government of Israel to retract these plans immediately and end its expansion of settlements in the West Bank,” the statement said, warning that the project would further undermine peace and Israel’s international standing.
The countries also called on businesses not to bid for the construction contracts, citing potential legal and reputational risks linked to alleged breaches of international law.
They reaffirmed their support for a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” based on a two-state solution.
