Six Egyptian universities have been ranked among the world’s top 1,000 in the 2026 Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which assessed more than 2,500 higher education institutions worldwide.

Higher Education and Scientific Research Minister and Acting Culture Minister Abdelaziz Konsowa praised the performance of Egyptian universities in the latest edition of the prestigious global ranking.

Konsowa said the ministry closely monitors the performance of Egyptian universities in international rankings, noting that their presence in prestigious rankings such as the Shanghai Ranking reflects the success of the state’s efforts to internationalise higher education and enhance the global competitiveness of Egyptian academic institutions.

Cairo University retained its position as Egypt’s top-ranked university for the fifth consecutive year, placing in the 401-500 bracket globally.

Alexandria University and Mansoura University jointly ranked second nationally, in the 601-700 bracket, followed by Ain Shams University and Al-Azhar University in the 701-800 bracket. Zagazig University ranked in the 901-1000 bracket.

All six Egyptian universities recorded strong performance in the research output (PUB) indicator. Cairo University posted the highest score among Egyptian universities at 39.1 points, followed by Mansoura University (32.9), Alexandria University (31.9), Ain Shams University (31.2), Al-Azhar University (29.2) and Zagazig University (26.5).

Ain Shams University recorded the strongest growth among Egyptian universities in publications in Nature and Science, while Al-Azhar University nearly doubled its score on the same indicator compared with 2023. Alexandria University also performed strongly in the Alumni indicator.
