The US military began conducting airstrikes in Iran on Wednesday, a US official tells Axios.
These are the first US strikes in Iran since President Trump paused the bombing campaign last Friday to give negotiations another chance.
The strikes on Wednesday came in retaliation for an Iranian missile attack targeting a US base in Jordan a day earlier. All of the missiles were intercepted, according to the US military.
rump told reporters Wednesday afternoon that the US would hit Iran “very hard” later in the day.
“It’s our turn,” Trump said.
Trump claimed Iran had acknowledged that launching the missiles was a mistake and asked the US not to retaliate.
Trump paused the strikes after 13 consecutive nights of attacks on Iranian military targets, opening a brief window for diplomacy.
Iran’s missile attack shattered the pause and prompted Trump to resume the military campaign five days later.
