Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population announced on Wednesday the launch of the 2nd phase of its specialized clinics for the treatment of internet and gaming addiction, expanding services under the presidential mental health initiative “Your Health, Your Happiness.”
Health Ministry Spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said the 2nd phase introduces the service at four additional hospitals: Heliopolis Hospital for Addiction Treatment in Cairo, Benha Mental Health Hospital in Qalyubia, Shebin El Kom Mental Health Hospital in Monufia, and Sohag Mental Health Hospital.
The expansion increases the total number of hospitals providing the service to 10, following the first phase at Abbassia, Khanka, Maamoura, Damira, Minya and Assiut hospitals, extending coverage to more governorates and age groups.
Abdel Ghaffar said the clinics offer early diagnosis, assessment and comprehensive treatment for internet and gaming addiction, as well as associated mental health disorders. Services include evidence-based psychological care, rehabilitation programs, medical education and family counseling to help families manage cases and prevent addiction, alongside individualized treatment and rehabilitation plans to support patients’ reintegration into society.
Ayman Abbas, head of the General Secretariat of Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, said the initiative also provides a free online self-assessment questionnaire through Egypt’s National Mental Health Platform. The tool enables users to conduct an initial evaluation, determine age-appropriate daily screen time, and receive guidance on the appropriate treatment pathway if needed.
Sally El Nouby, head of the Gaming Addiction Initiative, said 120 patients visited the clinics during the two-month pilot phase. Males accounted for 63% of cases, while females represented 37%. Young people and adolescents made up 60% of patients, and 70% of cases involved individuals who were not employed.
