Egypt’s Armed Forces have released a new episode of the documentary series “Hekayat Batal” (A Hero’s Story), recounting the life and sacrifice of Sheikh Mostafa Salem Khowaiter, one of the prominent tribal figures of Sheikh Zuweid and a man remembered for his devotion to Sinai and his unwavering partnership with Egypt’s Armed Forces in the fight against terrorism.
The episode, published on the official platforms of military spokesperson Brigadier General Staff Gharib Abdel Hafez, forms part of an ongoing effort to document the stories of heroes who gave their lives defending the nation.
Through testimonies, the documentary highlights the exceptional tracking skills inherited by generations of Sinai tribesmen. Sheikh Mostafa and his group mastered the art of reading footprints and navigating the desert terrain, enabling them to determine the movements, numbers and routes of terrorist elements and relay critical information to the Armed Forces.
Comrades recalled that he was far more than a guide. He was a father figure and mentor who cared deeply for those around him, constantly reminding his men to beware of mines and to protect themselves, even while following their movements from home to ensure their safe return.
Before a mission to track down terrorists hiding inside a house, Sheikh Mostafa made a remark that his companions would never forget. When offered a protective vest, he handed it to another fighter and said:
“You wear it. God willing, I won’t need this vest again.”
During the raid, he surprised three terrorists and moved directly into the middle of the confrontation, shouting:
“Hold your position. Surrender yourselves!”
Hoping to capture them alive and bring them to justice, he exposed himself to danger and was struck by three bullets, falling beside a tree where he had often sought shade.
His comrades refused to let his killers escape. Tracking them for more than eight kilometres and coordinating with Special Forces and the Air Force, they pursued the terrorists from dawn until sunset, eliminating the last of them.
Today, the same areas where Sheikh Mostafa shed his blood have witnessed a new chapter. The once-devastated districts of Al-Matalla and Al-Husseinat are being transformed through housing projects and development initiatives, standing as a lasting tribute to those who sacrificed everything so that Sinai could live again.
For those who knew him, Sheikh Mostafa Salem Khowaiter remains the embodiment of a man who devoted his life to Sinai and carried the nation’s shield until his final breath.
