Fresh off a new diplomatic accord with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump is turning his attention to North Korea, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said Friday.
Speaking to reporters in Seoul following a bilateral meeting at the G7 summit in France, Lee revealed he warned Trump that existing international sanctions against Pyongyang have become “ineffective.”
“The effectiveness of sanctions has diminished due to military cooperation between North Korea and Russia stemming from the war in Ukraine,” Lee said, adding that “even a small amount of assistance from Russia is of great help to North Korea.”
Speculation about a diplomatic pivot intensified hours after the U.S.–Iran agreement was announced, when Trump posted an uncaptioned photo on social media of his 2018 Singapore summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The Korean Peninsula remains technically at war, as the 1950–53 conflict ended in an armistice rather than a formal peace treaty.
