Egypt’s Minister of Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, witnessed on Tuesday the launch of trial commercial operations at the new Safaga Multipurpose Terminal 2, a key component of the Greater Safaga Port development project aimed at strengthening Egypt’s position as a regional logistics and transit trade hub.

The terminal received its first two vessels: the UGR Al Samha, arriving from Singapore carrying 5,000 vehicles, and the Sven Prosper, arriving from King Abdullah Port with 2,642 TEUs.

Covering 776,000 square metres, the terminal features a 1,100-metre quay with a depth of up to 17 metres. The facility is equipped with advanced container-handling systems, administrative buildings, workshops, warehouses and international-standard safety and security infrastructure.

Minister El-Wazir said the terminal is a central component of the Safaga–Qena–Abu Tartour integrated logistics corridor, one of eight international logistics corridors being developed in Egypt.

He added that the project will support industrial, mining, export and import activities in Upper Egypt, including projects within the Golden Triangle economic zone.

The minister stressed that the facility is also set to encourage investment in manufacturing, logistics, storage and value-added industries.

The minister described the terminal as a gateway for expanding Egypt’s international trade links, including connections with Gulf and East African markets.

He noted that Egypt currently ranks 19th globally, 1st in Africa and 2nd in the Arab world in terms of international trade connectivity, with a goal of reaching the world’s top 15 by 2030.
