US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that negotiators were in the “final stages” of securing a Middle East peace agreement, following a pause in renewed clashes between Iran and Israel that had threatened to reignite the months-long conflict.
Trump has repeatedly asserted that a deal with Tehran is close at hand, though diplomatic efforts have slowed and both sides have exchanged fire despite a ceasefire that began on April 8.
“Iran and Israel were trading attacks, and now they’ve both agreed, through me, to stop. We’re now in the final stages of what will be a very, very strong deal,” Trump told reporters after returning from an NBA Finals game.
When asked whether the timeline would be days or weeks, he responded that it would take “two or three days.”
