Egypt’s Ambassador to Rome, Bassam Rady, met on Friday with Italian Prosecutor General Pietro Gaeta to discuss several cases involving Egyptian nationals in several Italian cities.
The meeting forms part of the Egyptian Embassy in Rome’s ongoing efforts to support the Egyptian community in Italy, assist in regularising their legal status, and facilitate residency procedures. It also aimed to review the details and circumstances of specific cases to safeguard the rights of Egyptian citizens, ensure their legal protection, and reassure their families in Egypt.
Ambassador Rady noted that Italian authorities have consistently demonstrated full co-operation and close coordination with the embassy. He explained that in certain incidents, Egyptian nationals had fallen victim to assaults by individuals of other nationalities, often arising from personal disputes.
He stressed that while the embassy fully respects Italian legal procedures, it works closely with the relevant authorities to help expedite investigations and judicial processes, given the profound social and humanitarian dimensions of these cases.
Rady also underscored a fundamental principle governing diplomatic work abroad, noting that embassies do not possess legal authority that supersedes the laws of their host countries. In accordance with international conventions regulating diplomatic and consular relations, diplomatic missions are required to fully respect and comply with local laws.
The ambassador reaffirmed that the Egyptian Embassy and its entire staff remain deeply committed to serving Egyptians in Italy, whether they are residents or visitors.
Addressing young Egyptians living abroad, particularly those seeking employment, Rady urged them to avoid suspicious gatherings and individuals involved in questionable activities. He warned that such actors often seek to exploit the limited experience, good intentions, or economic vulnerabilities of young job seekers.
