Minister of State for Information Diaa Rashwan has said that Egypt’s press remains one of the country’s most influential and respected institutions, citing its long professional history and the experience of its journalists.
Rashwan made the remarks during a meeting on Monday with editors-in-chief of state-owned newspapers and magazines, organised in co-ordination with Chairman of the National Press Authority, Abdel Sadek El Shorbagy.
During discussions that lasted more than four hours, Rashwan said he was confident that the Egyptian press continues to hold a leading position in the modern media landscape despite growing challenges facing national media institutions and the rapid expansion of digital platforms.
He described digital media and social networking platforms as both a challenge and an opportunity for traditional journalism.
National press institutions could strengthen their influence by adopting modern digital tools while maintaining professional standards and credible journalism, Rashwan said.
Established media organisations are capable of delivering balanced, high-quality content that responds to the interests of younger generations and counters what he described as the “chaos” and unreliable content sometimes circulated through unprofessional online platforms, he added.
