Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Co-operation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdel-Aati held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, during which they expressed appreciation for the strategic partnership binding Egypt and Russia.
They also reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing bilateral co-operation across various fields in line with the leadership directives in both countries.
Abdel-Aati praised the progress achieved in a number of joint projects, notably the Russian industrial zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and the Dabaa nuclear power plant, stressing the importance of accelerating implementation and attracting further Russian investment in priority sectors.
He also highlighted the importance of strengthening economic, trade, and investment relations between the two countries, and of increasing Russian investments in Egypt.
In this context, he reviewed Egypt’s ongoing efforts to improve the investment climate and further develop its legislative and institutional frameworks to better support the private sector.
The foreign minister also commended co-operation in grain imports, expressing Egypt’s aspiration to further enhance this co-operation and explore the establishment of a logistics hub for grain with Russian participation.
On multilateral co-operation, Abdel-Aati stressed the importance of enhancing coordination between the two countries within the BRICS framework, including efforts to reform the international financial system and strengthen the role of the New Development Bank in supporting the priorities of developing countries. The talks also addressed regional developments.
Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s efforts to de-escalate tensions and contain conflicts in the region, stressing the importance of adhering to diplomatic and negotiation tracks in the Iranian–US context to support regional security and stability.
He reiterated Egypt’s position on Sudan, stressing the importance of preserving the country’s unity and territorial integrity, supporting its national institutions, rejecting parallel entities, and calling for an inclusive political process under full Sudanese ownership.
Regarding Libya, Abdel-Aati reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast support for Libya’s unity and stability, stressing the need to unify national institutions and reach a comprehensive political settlement paving the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections.
The discussions also covered developments in the Horn of Africa, where Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s support for efforts aimed at achieving stability in Somalia, stressing that the security of the Red Sea remains the responsibility of its littoral states.
For his part, Lavrov expressed Russia’s appreciation for the ongoing co-operation with Egypt, stressing the importance of continued consultation and coordination on issues of mutual concern, reflecting the depth of bilateral relations.
