Cairo, Bucharest deepen academic, research ties

Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Abdel Aziz Konsowa and Prince Radu of Romania probed on Monday ways of boosting co-operation between the two countries.

The meeting, which was held at the at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Capital Konsowa, highlighted the long-standing ties with Romania, and stressed the need to expand collaboration between universities and research institutions in both countries.

 He also noted that strong political support is currently driving efforts to develop Egypt’s higher education system.

Konsowa reaffirmed the Egyptian government’s focus on opening up the sector internationally through partnerships with leading global universities, aiming to exchange knowledge, expertise, and best practices.

For his part, Prince Radu, commended the deep-rooted the Egyptian-Romanian ties, noting that 2026 year marks 120 years since diplomatic ties were established.

He also expressed interest in boosting co-operation with Egyptian universities and creating more opportunities for academic partnerships and mobility of researchers.

Prince Radu asserted Romania’s commitment to boosting bilateral relations through future agreements and expanding co-operation in key sectors, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

During the meeting, both sides discussed ways of consolidating scientific co-operation, including academic exchanges, joint programmes, dual degrees, scholarships, and student mobility initiatives.

Meanwhile, the Romanian side announced the allocation of 35 scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year, covering both undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

At the end of the meeting, both sides stressing the importance of continuing co-operation to further strengthen bilateral relations and support joint efforts in higher education and scientific research.
