The ministries of transport, and housing, utilities, and urban communities convened a high-level meeting, on Thursday, to discuss frameworks for organising transportation within new urban communities and strengthening their connectivity to modern public transport networks.

The meeting, chaired by Minister of Transport, Kamel El-Wazir, and Minister of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, Randa El-Menshawy, was attended by senior officials from both ministries.

Discussions focused on a unified action plan to regulate and enhance public transport services across new cities, ensuring the provision of safe, reliable, efficient, and high-quality mobility solutions for residents.

The proposed framework emphasises the integration of internal transportation systems within new urban communities with key national mass transit projects, including Light Rail Transit (LRT), Monorail, and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) networks.

This approach is designed to improve connectivity between emerging urban centres and existing areas, while encouraging greater reliance on public transport as part of a broader shift towards sustainable mobility.

Both ministers highlighted the importance of aligning urban planning with transport infrastructure through proactive coordination. This includes strategically-locating transport stations based on population density and economic activity to maximise accessibility and facilitate ease of movement.

Such integration is expected to enhance service delivery, reduce congestion, improve road safety, and contribute to lowering environmental emissions.

Lieutenant General El-Wazir underscored that modern mass transit systems are fundamental to the development of smart and sustainable cities, playing a vital role in supporting economic growth, improving quality of life, and reducing dependence on private vehicles.

He also commended the ongoing collaboration between the two ministries, noting its positive impact on advancing a cohesive national transport network.

For her part, El-Menshawy reaffirmed her ministry’s commitment to deepening co-operation with the Ministry of Transport. She emphasised the need to further institutionalise joint planning mechanisms to ensure efficient operation, improved mobility within new cities, and seamless integration with national transport systems, in line with Egypt’s sustainable urban expansion goals.
