WASHINGTON — US President Donald Trump has reviewed a request from Pakistan’s prime minister to extend the deadline for Iran by two weeks, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said.
Leavitt told US network Axios that Trump will respond to the request without providing additional details on his final position.
The request comes amid diplomatic efforts led by Pakistan to contain tensions between the US and Iran. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for a two-week extension for Iran while also requesting that Tehran reopen the Strait of Hormuz during the same period to allow for the resumption of negotiations.
These developments coincide with the approaching deadline set by Trump for reaching a deal amid threats of a broad military escalation if diplomatic efforts fail.
