Executive Director of Egypt’s Universal Health Insurance Authority (UHIA), Mai Farid, and Director of the Health, Nutrition, and Population Sector for the Middle East and North Africa in the World Bank (WB), discussed on Monday ways of strengthening bilateral co-operation.
The meeting, held at the authority’s headquarters in Heliopolis, Cairo, reviewed progress in the comprehensive health insurance system.
A WB mission is currently on a visit to Egypt, March 29- April 9,
The Universal Health Insurance System is proceeding from the establishment phase to performance improvement, aiming to deliver high-quality, efficient, and financially sustainable healthcare, Farid said.
She also highlighted efforts to upgrade service packages, improve infrastructure, and expand private sector participation to increase service availability, particularly in undeserved areas.
The authority is also developing performance-based contracting mechanisms, she noted.
Farid emphasised the importance of digital transformation and better health information systems to enhance efficiency, support decision-making, and maximise international partnerships.
For his part, WB’s Varkey lauded the progress achieved in the Egyptian health system.
He added that Egypt plays an important role in the World Bank’s “National Health Compact 2030,” which aims to expand access to affordable healthcare for 1.5 billion people worldwide.
