CAIRO — Egypt showed real strength at the 2026 Compak Sporting Shooting Championship in Cairo, grabbing 14 medals—five gold, four silver, and five bronze.

That’s more than just a solid run; it really shows that Egypt can go toe-to-toe with top shooters from around the world.

Franco Donato stole the spotlight. The Olympic champ battled hard and barely edged out the reigning world champion, Gerry Tamas, by a single target.

Scoring 194 points, Donato clinched the title and made a bit of history too, since this was Egypt’s first time hosting the championship.

Donato kept his momentum going in the Open category, grabbing first place once again.

Tamas from Hungary finished second, while Egypt’s own Ahmed Ashra rounded out the podium.

The women’s competition was equally intense. Myra Sprokulis of Latvia took gold, Egypt’s Jamila El-Dahshoury followed with silver, and Saga Hendy claimed the bronze.

Egypt’s younger shooters showed up strong, too. Fouad Habashi came out on top in the junior division, with Luke Wagih Botros in second, and Saif Amer in third.

The men’s category was dominated by Egypt: Tahseen Matar won gold, Yassin Awida silver, and Ashour Zaalouk bronze.

Veterans weren’t left behind. Mohamed Ashra picked up gold among the experienced shooters, Harry Vartan took silver, and Halim Abu Seif secured bronze.

Hazem Hosny, President of the Egyptian and African Shooting Federations, called the championship a total triumph, technically and in terms of organisation.

The glowing international feedback only boosted Egypt’s standing as a top-notch host for global sports.
