The Ministry of Health and Population announced on Sunday that the Elderly Healthcare Initiative – one of the “100 MillionHealth” initiatives launched by the President- has successfully provided comprehensive medical services to 2.145 million citizens aged 65 and above since its launch in October 2022.
The initiative aims to improve the quality of life for the elderly through early detection of the most common non-communicable diseases, primarily hypertension, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, kidney disease, anemia, and malnutrition, Ministry Spokesperson, Hossam Abdel-Ghaffar,explained.
It also includes clinical examinations such as electrocardiograms (ECG), abdominal and liver ultrasounds, eye exams, and oral and dental health assessments. In addition, it provides early screening for age-related psychological and cognitive disorders using scientifically approved mental and cognitive questionnaires, he added in a statement on the Cabinet Facebook page.
Abdel-Ghaffar also emphasised that the initiative goes beyond screening by offering continuous follow-up.
Each beneficiary receives a periodic follow-up card that allows for regular health assessments. Cases requiring advanced medical intervention are referred to specialized hospitals to complete treatment and receive the necessary care.
The ministry affirmed its ongoing efforts to expand the initiative’s reach to cover the largest possible number of elderly citizens, with the aim of enabling them to live healthier and more dignified lives in later years.
