Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty underlined on Sunday the importance of enhancing cooperation and integration among Nile-basin countries to achieve mutual benefit and shared interests.
The top diplomat gave the remarks during a phone call with Kenyan Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi.Abdelatty said the talks focused on ways to strengthen bilateral relations and coordination on issues of mutual interest, in line with directives from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Kenyan President William Ruto ahead of an upcoming African Union summit.
On water security, Abdelatty underscored the need to uphold consensus and reject unilateral measures in the Nile Basin, welcoming consultative steps approved by the Nile Basin Initiative’s ministerial council to restore inclusivity and advance development projects in line with international law.
He praised growing momentum in Egypt–Kenya ties and called for enhanced economic, trade and investment cooperation, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, energy, construction and information technology.Abdelatty called for boosting Egyptian and Kenyan investments in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, energy, construction and information technology sectors, saying this would help increase bilateral trade and create new development opportunities.He added that Egyptian companies are well positioned to benefit from opportunities in the Kenyan market, particularly in infrastructure, energy, agriculture and industry, given their accumulated expertise, contributing to comprehensive development in Kenya.The two ministers also agreed on the importance of continued coordination on regional and continental issues, especially ahead of the next meeting of the steering committee of the AU Development Agency (NEPAD), currently under Egypt’s chairmanship.
