Sobhi: Full state support to restore Egypt’s football leadership

Hassan: We are committed to bringing joy to Egyptian fans

In a decisive move to bolster Egypt’s international football standing Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi on Thursday convened a high-level press conference to announce the state’s full backing of the national team’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

Attended by President of the Egyptian Football Association Hani Abu Rida, (EFA), and Technical Director Hossam Hassan, the Minister underscored that the current strategy transcends immediate goals, aiming instead for a comprehensive transformation of the sport through 2038.

This roadmap integrates infrastructure development with elite performance, highlighted by the success of the National Teams Centre in reducing operational costs and the Capitano Egypt project – under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi – which has already funneled 168 players into clubs, including two professional placements abroad.

The Minister emphasised that the government’s role extends beyond the pitch to ensure institutional stability and financial sustainability for the entire football ecosystem.
Sobhi revealed plans for new investment companies to support club growth and confirmed ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Housing to resolve land disputes for major entities like Zamalek SC.
Furthermore, the state’s commitment to infrastructure remains a priority, with over 4,500 stadiums developed nationwide and dedicated support directed toward historic clubs such as Ismaily and Al-Ittihad Alexandria.
By providing elite medical, logistical, and technical resources, the Ministry aims to restore Egypt’s African leadership and ensure the national team enters the World Cup qualifiers with the discipline and focus required to meet the high expectations of millions of fans.

Hossam Hassan also expressed a profound sense of responsibility and confidence as he prepares to lead the Pharaohs toward the global stage.

Acknowledging the weight of the nation’s aspirations, Hassan affirmed that the coaching staff is implementing a rigorous and disciplined preparation programme designed to elevate the players’ physical and tactical readiness to peak levels.
He noted that the moral support provided by the state and the fans serves as a vital catalyst for the squad, motivating them to exert maximum effort during this critical transition.
Hassan’s vision centres on a high-fighting spirit and a commitment to restoring the team’s dominance, ensuring that every player is mentally and physically equipped to deliver performances that honour Egypt’s rich footballing heritage.

Echoing the sentiments of national unity, EFA President Hani Abu Rida detailed the technical execution of the roadmap, which capitalises on the positive momentum gained during the recent Africa Cup of Nations.
The federation is focused on lowering the average age of the squad and integrating emerging talents who have shown exceptional promise. To bridge the gap to international excellence, the EFA has scheduled a series of high-profile friendly matches, including clashes against Saudi Arabia and Spain in March, followed by two additional fixtures in May.
These matches are intended to provide the necessary friction with world-class opponents, ensuring the team is battle-tested and psychologically prepared for the pressures of the World Cup journey.
